A cold, heavy snowstorm hit a rural county, and the local veterinarian was called out to a remote farm in the middle of the night. A prize-winning dairy cow was having a very difficult delivery, and the farmer was desperate for help.
The vet arrived, threw on his coveralls, and got straight to work in the freezing barn. The farmer’s eight-year-old son, curious about all the commotion, came out to the barn, wrapped himself in a heavy blanket, and sat on the top rail of the wooden fence to watch.
The vet worked tirelessly for over two hours in the dim light, pulling, straining, and using all of his strength to assist the cow. Finally, with one massive heave, the vet successfully delivered a healthy, bouncing calf.
The vet wiped his brow, completely exhausted, and looked up at the young boy sitting on the fence. He smiled, wanting to see what the kid thought of the miracle of nature. "Well, son, did you have any questions about what you just saw?"
The boy looked down at the calf, then at the tired vet, and blinked. "Just one. How fast was that calf running when it hit the back of that cow?"
